God Murders 11 Year Old Girl!

Okay I suppose a more accurate headline would be:

Delusional parents allow their innocent daughter to die a very slow and excruciatingly painful death while waiting for an imaginary man in the sky to issue a "healing" instead of seeking medical attention.

but you get the point.

In which 3rd-world, provincial backwater did this tragedy occur? Yup, you guessed it; right here in the land of the free and home of the brave. Free to believe in silly invisible men and brave enough to entrust your physical well-being to him.

Thanks to religious belief, Weston, Wisconsin now has 1 less little girl that will ever get to play with her friends again, have her first kiss, or get to fall in love. Her parents decided that, what must have been several weeks of illness, was a matter best left to god; and prayed for a healing rather than take their child to a doctor. Sadly, the child had undiagnosed diabetes and her death could have been avoided by the simple administration of insulin. This little girl needed insulin but got prayer instead. Great.

As a father, I can only begin to imagine the crippling grief that comes with the death of your child. But the utter senselessness of this tragedy makes it infuriating.

How many millions more must die in religion's name before we cast off the chains of magical thinking?

I like your title better! It's always fun to see how you'll spin a story. If med school didn't work out for you, you definitely would have had a future in op ed :)

Thanks. I originally wrote a much larger post but after reading it, decided it was more of a rant that would have required an even longer post to make it cohesive and readable. So I hacked it down.

The police chief said, "There is no reason to remove them[other children]. There is no abuse or signs of abuse that we can see."

There was no comment from the chief's seeing eye dog, Rufus.

My guess is that, shy of employing the Chewbacca Defense , the family has to get charged and convicted.

Unfortunately, the family will never be convicted, and it is unlikely that they will be charged. The State laws appear to codify this type of behavior.

Lou, I hope you are wrong.

But if not, the I think T.J. said it best,"That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government,....

These people should be made an example of so, at the very least, maybe other nut-jobs will learn that praying to an imaginary friend doesn't preclude you from your "more terrestrial" responsibilities.

By the way, in my opinion every religious leader that doesn't immediately come out and publicly condemn this silliness is guilty of [yet another] a crime against humanity.

The 'form of government' is not the destructive element here ...... it is the laws. Be careful what you wish for ...... modifying the laws to protect 'vulnerable people' will most likely impact on the abortion issue AND people with PVS.

Would it be possible for the State to protect a 12 yr old diabetic from her parents, and at the same time allow partial birth abortion?

The nation needs to define a few key terms (ex: life, 'vulnerable person', etc.), and we need to clearly articulate the framework for government intervention.

Sorry, but there is no easy answer here ;(

I stand corrected, it is the laws that may need "tweaking" here not the government.

Your points about the "vulnerable person" issue is well taken. Although this issue is polluted by the injection of religion as well. (for those whose basis for morality is religious, anyway)

How about I abandon my usual libertarian tendencies and make the clam that when it comes to religion and its "practice" that we are all vulnerable and could do with some protection?

No I can't do that. ;)

But what can be done? I suppose what would be a good start,would be stripping away the "protected" status that religion seems to enjoy in this country (not to mention tax exempt status) and being a little less politically correct while we all stumble over our collective dicks trying not to offend someone's precious 'religious' sensibilities.

If I told you I believe that the ghost of Napoleon speaks to me and guides my every decision you would not hesitate to label me as decidedly off my pot. Change Napoleon to Jesus, and suddenly not only is it considered intolerance to criticize 'my belief', but my piety is given a respected status.

People may believe whatever they want. But it shouldn't be beyond reproach simply because it is religious. People who claim that there are leprechauns running around aren't given this sort of deference.

I'm just saying,it would be a nice start. Let's level the playing field, and call a spade a spade.

People are free to believe whatever they wish, but their behavior is governed by the law. In that sense the only 'protected status' the religions enjoy is tax exemption, and that 'legal loophole' should be eliminated.

How do we resolve it all? Well, we need a leader with the courage to speak the truth. Unfortunately, finding a politician with the courage of his convictions is harder than finding a needle in a haystack of needles. Additionally, we need judges who will enforce the law, not legislate from the bench.

By the by, the only ('mainstream') religion that gets a 'pass' anymore is Islam. Those stinky, dirty pajama wearing, no dental hygiene having, ass in air 20X a day rejects can do anything they damn well please !

Don't hold back brother. How do you really feel?

I agree that people seem to give a wider berth to Muslims (something about their proclivities to detonate things) but I think that religion as a whole gets a lot more respect than I think it deserves[read NONE].

People seem reticent to criticize someone's ridiculous beliefs while they subscribe to their own set of religious beliefs, albeit usually just as nonsensical.

In stead of "op ed," you might have a more entertaining future in "Pope ed," or "Papa ed."
